The Island of Spetses - Monday 22nd September

The group's first day in Greece turned out to be a very unseasonal stormy & rainy day in Greece!
We awoke to find the sky very dark with threatening clouds & forecasts of severe thunderstorms throughout the morning.
With our bus & private boat awaiting the show had to go on though so we hoped for the best & boarded our bus - just as the first drops of rain began to fall.  But after about an hour of driving the weather deteriorated fast, with high winds & torrential rain.
To avoid a rough sea crossing to Hydra we made a quick change of plans & diverted to nearby Kosta to take the larger ferry across the more protected channel to Spetses, Hydra's neighboring island.
At last we were in luck - the rain stopped before we got off our bus, we were in good time of the ferry, & the sea was calm as we crossed towards Spetses which proved every bit as charming as Hydra.
After a short orientation we split up to explore the island - visiting the Bouboulina House Museum to learn the story of a legendary Greek heroine, strolling along the waterfront or through the narrow lanes, & enjoying lunch by the harbor, the 'Dapia'.
Just as we met-up again the weather began to turn so we chartered private water taxis which sped through the waves & we were back on board our bus by the time the rain came again!
This evening was free in Nafplion, to choose local eateries, explore the town, or just relax after a successful though unexpected day.
