Welcome to Santorini - Friday 25th September

Despite enjoying our time in Athens, we were very excited to depart this morning as our destination for the next 3 days is Santorini!  One of the most fabled & beautiful islands in the Mediterranean.
Our departure from our hotel, check-in at the airport, & flight with Aegean Airlines all went smoothly, uneventful in the best possible way.
So we arrived in Santorini on time & looking forward to exploring the island, & once abroad our bus we departed for our first stop, Akrotiri.
We began with free time for lunch is a series of waterfront tavernas, then visited the archaeological site of Ancient Akrotiri.  This highly-developed settlement of 3 floor structures, built by an unknown people, was destroyed by a volcanic explosion around 3,600 years ago, buried under thick layers of pumice & volcanic ash!  Our expert local guide Chara gave us an in-depth tour the site, helping make sense of the still largely-unexcavated remains.
Next it was time to check-in to our accommodations for the next 3 nights, & what a treat we had in store!  The fantastic Skyfall Suites, flowing along a hillside overlooking the Aegean, only opened in July this year so are completely new.  Each unit enjoys spectacular views, a private terrace & pool or tub, & is beautifully decorated in a simple but stylish Greek style.
After time to luxuriate in our new surroundings we traveled the short distance into Fira, the capital of Santorini, to enjoy the famous views of the town's whitewashed buildings clinging to the caldera rim & have dinner in one of the island's finest restaurants with the sunset before us.  What an end to our day!
